A countertop dishwasher has to share space with chopping boards, the sink, and your other appliances. The smallest machine can preserve preparation space but need more frequent loads; a wider rack can reduce loading frustration while taking over the best part of the counter. Start with the water connection and your actual plates, then choose the cabinet size.

The quick decision

Our picks, by the space you have

Shortlist the HAVA R01 for a narrow counter and manual tank filling. Shortlist the Danby for a larger rack when the counter and faucet connection can support it.

These are editorial selections from the models compared, based on manufacturer documentation. We have not hands-on tested them or measured performance, reliability, or noise. Confirm the exact model, installation instructions, seller, availability, and returns before purchase. “Best” refers to the use cases within this shortlist, rather than a market-wide ranking. The shortlist

Why these small products make the list

01

Best for tank filling on a narrow counter

HAVA R01

16.9 W × 16.9 D × 18.1 H in · Built-in 5 L water tank

A manually filled tank avoids depending on a compatible faucet connector. The compact square body suits a short stretch of counter, especially when a wider six-place-setting dishwasher would displace the kitchen's main preparation area.

The compromise

You still need a drain destination and space to fill it. The brand lists a 29.2-inch front-to-back length with the door open; plate size and rack layout can limit a load before the machine looks full.

02

Best for a larger countertop rack

Danby DDW621WDB

21.65 W × 19.69 D × 17.24 H in · 6 place settings

The larger rack is worth considering when plates, mugs, and utensils accumulate through the day. Its lower body can also be useful beneath a wall cabinet, provided the entire installation and hose route meet the manual.

The compromise

It occupies a wider, deeper patch of counter and requires a compatible faucet connection. Six place settings describe a standardized arrangement, not a promise that six people's pots and dinner dishes fit.

01

Measure the counter while you are using it

Record the clear width and depth, but also open the nearby drawers and stand where you normally prepare food. Check the space beneath the wall cabinet and the route to the sink. A machine that fits only when every other kitchen task stops is a poor space saver. Include the open door and loading position rather than treating the closed cabinet rectangle as the installation.

02

Check dishes instead of household-size claims

Measure the diameter of the plates you use most and note tall glasses, bowls, and pans. Place-setting claims do not describe every combination of cookware. A small rack might handle breakfast dishes well yet struggle with one cooking session. Consider whether handwashing the occasional large pan is an acceptable tradeoff for keeping a more compact machine.

03

Choose between filling and connecting

A tank simplifies one connection problem but adds a pitcher-filling task. A faucet-connected dishwasher avoids that step when the adapter is compatible, yet can occupy the tap during operation. Neither removes drainage. Plan the receiving fixture and hose position, then decide which inconvenience fits your routine. Keep access to water for cooking and cleaning in mind.

04

Compare the total kitchen compromise

The right machine should earn back enough effort to justify its permanent footprint. Think about how often you cook, how quickly clean dishes need to be available, and where detergent and loading accessories will live. Check the current model manual, return terms, and support route before ordering. We have not measured cleaning performance, so these picks describe fit and setup priorities.

Before you choose

Common questions

Does a tank dishwasher need a sink?

It needs a manufacturer-approved drain destination. Manual tank filling removes reliance on a faucet supply connection, not the need to dispose of wash water.

Can I leave either in a closed cabinet?

Do not assume that a countertop model permits enclosed installation. Use the exact manual's location, access, and clearance requirements.
